Challenges still there to plastics ban

According to Reuters, the 5th round of negotiations for the UN Plastics Convention recently failed to reach an agreement, with the French Environment Minister expressing "anger" at the outcome. Last year, representatives from 170 countries held a week-long meeting in Busan, originally scheduled for the final round of negotiations, but it ended without any results. This year's meeting also failed to produce substantive results.

The UN previously emphasized the significance of the convention as comparable to the Paris Climate Agreement, but oil-producing countries, due to conflicting interests, have resisted it. Data shows that global plastic consumption is expected to exceed 500 million tons in 2024. Recycling alone cannot solve the pollution crisis; systemic change and global collaboration are urgently needed.

Current solutions include banning plastics, strengthening recycling, and monitoring the entire process. However, multiple challenges remain, such as responsibilities shared between developing and developed countries, and the implementation of funding and technology. International consensus has yet to be reached.
